Being a professional coach I have had the opportunity to meet and assist many different types of individuals. I personally experienced the trials and tribulations of weight loss and gain during the course of my life. Therefore, I know first hand how difficult it can be to lose weight and keep it off. What I have found over the years is the number one problem was "ME". What I mean by "ME" is I choose what I want to eat and when I eat. The only reason my previous diet attempts failed in the past was because I didn't learn anything from the experience. My eating habits didn't change. Retraining or reprogramming takes repetition. Just like a baseball player learns to perfect his throw, he does it by throwing the ball over and over again. In order to paint a picture, you practice painting over and over again. Repetition retrains your mind and body to perform in a certain way. Losing weight and keeping it off is no different.
The first step in the retraining process is identifying the goal or what do you wish to accomplish. Next you identify all the actions needed to be performed in order to accomplish the goal. Here is an example:
The Goal is to lose 25 pounds and keep it off for 12 months.
The action steps would be:
1. Make a commitment and establish a plan
2. Learn how to eat healthy (adopt a healthy eating program)
3. Learn how the body processes food (educate yourself)
4. Identify What type of eater are you? (emotional or essential)
5. Identify and perform a healthy exercise program
6. Eat healthy meals throughout the day (Follow a Healthy Weight Loss Program)
7. Seek support when needed to stay on track (supplement, program guidance, etc.)
8. Monitor progress and improve weak areas in the plan
9. Allow for unexpected situations and plan accordingly (vacations, holidays, etc.)
When you are ready to make a commitment to a plan you have either created or choose to follow, you have taken the first step to success. When you can also look ahead and plan for any unforeseen situations that may occur, you are guaranteeing your success. This not only applies to losing weight but it also applies to all types of goal setting in life.
Note: If you are an emotional eater or turn to food for comfort then you will need to include an action step to determine what drives you to eat and how to eliminate those types of triggers in your life. You will not be successful in your weight lose goal if you can not remove or conquer the triggers that motivate you to eat the wrong types of foods for your body and metabolism. The second reason individuals fail with weight loss is they fail to determine the type of eater they are and remove any triggers that will cause them to fail or lose sight of their goal.
